“It was not like I expected the Karoo to be,” says Marliza, “when Thinus said he was buying a farm in the Karoo all I could think of was endless dry, dusty, rocky plains. What a surprise! Langfontein is a bit of paradise, green and lush – truly a hidden part of the Karoo just 50 km away from Graaff-Reinet.”

And what a surprise it was, driving through those dry, dusty, rocky plains and steadily entering a lush environment reminiscent of Mpumalanga. It was like entering a different era, where peace and tranquility rule.

Turning off the sand road one travels down an avenue of oak trees, past the dam before arriving at the manor house. It is here that a warm welcome awaits the weary traveler before settling into your accommodation in the 1830’s cottage at Langfontein, the farmhouse or Dot’s Cottage at Westbrook.

All units are well equipped for self-catering, braai packs are available. Our staff can also bake bread for our guests.

Peaceful, relaxing, stunning scenery…

1830’s Cottage

This building, formerly a police station outpost, has been beautifully restored and converted into a cottage sleeping 4 – 6. It is the ideal getaway for a couple, or small family, searching for that illusive sense of tranquility that is steadily disappearing from modern life. This venue, a few hundred metres from the manor house, is perfect for those that want to laze with a good book next to the pool, but for those more energetic there is the entire farm to discover.

Braai areas have been provided for those who enjoy sitting around a fire; there is also a well equipped kitchen for those that want to test their culinary skills.

Westbrook

“It’s like owning your own farm without all the hassles,” one ecstatic guest was heard to comment about Westbrook. And so it seems as Marliza leaves you to your own devices and heads back to Langfontein. One is amazed at the stillness and vastness of the surrounding Karoo landscape. “Every view is a painting,” another guest remarked.

Sleeping 12 – 14 comfortably in 6 bedrooms (main-en-suite and 3 private bathrooms), Westbrook is a place for a family gathering or a party of friends that feel the need to escape the big city for a weekend. The large dining room is perfect for long evenings around the table with good food, wine and excellent conversation. If the weather turns chilly, the fireplace in the lounge provides that cosy heat one expects in the country.

Westbrook and Dot’s Cottage are a beloved work in progress for Marliza as she is constantly is search for that right piece of furniture to add to the ambiance of this homestead.

Take a stroll in the early evening along the many paths on the farm – with luck you may see impala, springbuck, wild rabbit and reedbuck. Or sit on the stoep and enjoy the colours on the surrounding veld as the sun sets.

Restore the soul and rekindle romance

Dot’s Cottage

For those who would appreciate a hint of Provence or Tuscany, Dot’s Cottage, a stone’s throw from Westbrook’s homestead, is a beautiful stone and red brick building lovingly restored and maintained by Marliza and Thinus. It is ideal for a couple who want that little bit of solitude to restore the soul and rekindle romance.
