Slackpacking the Karoo – Nieu-Bethesda Camino and other Hikes
Slackpacking the Karoo is a unique hiking experience based in the heart of the Eastern Cape’s Karoo Highlands, centred around the character-filled village of Nieu-Bethesda,
just a short drive from Graaff-Reinet.
This operator specialises in multi-day, fully supported hiking trails known as slackpacking — where your main luggage is transported for you, allowing you to walk with just a light daypack. It’s an ideal way to explore the vast landscapes of the Great Karoo without the burden of a heavy backpack, while still enjoying comfort, excellent meals, and genuine local hospitality.
What You’ll Experience:
Stunning, off-the-beaten-track landscapes including open plains, farm roads, fossil beds, mountain views, and the majestic Ganora Canyon.
Overnight stays on working sheep and cattle farms and in guesthouses in Nieu-Bethesda, all chosen for their warm hospitality and comfort.
Delicious, home-cooked meals included, made from local ingredients and served with Karoo generosity.
Routes that pass cultural and historic landmarks such as Helen Martins’ Owl House, the Fossil Centre, San rock art, and the iconic church in Nieu-Bethesda.
Opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, and moments of deep peace in the silence of the Karoo.
Slackpacking Routes Available:
Nieu-Bethesda Camino (5 days / ~100km): A circular trail around the iconic Compassberg, staying each night on a different Karoo farm. Approximately 20–23km per day.
Nieu-Bethesda Mini Camino (3 days / ~60km): A shorter version of the Camino, where walkers return to the same guesthouse each night and explore the area on foot by day.
Canyon Mini Camino (3 days / 4 nights): A lighter hike (15–20km per day) that includes walking through the spectacular Ganora Canyon and immerses you in local history, fossils, and Karoo stories.
Conquer Compassberg (2 days / 3 nights): A guided hike for experienced and very fit hikers up Compassberg. Terms and conditions apply.
Some packages are semi-guided, while others are self-guided with full logistical support.
